Fun with Digital Art

Every week between 140-150 junior-seniors like myself and senior-seniors like mum attend the 40:31* Seniors Ministry at Bethesda Frankel Estate Church.

Last week, 40:31 organised a two-session over two weeks Savouring Life’s Moments with Digital Art workshop. I got roped in when someone pulled out at the last minute.

To be honest, I didn’t think about signing up for the workshop simply because media is something I’ve been working with for decades. I started out in the 80s as the in-house graphic designer for Holiday Inn back when everything was done manually.

By the 90s, I upskilled into the digital space, creating graphics and videos on various platforms. For the past ten-plus years, I’ve actually been on the teaching side—facilitating digital storytelling workshops and coaching professionals on how to write and produce their own videos.

There’s ALWAYS something new to learn if we are willing to be taught. It was fun to be introduced to a mobile app that I hadn’t used before.

Our facilitator, Ms Cheong Lai Siong, is a media facilitator associate from long ago. It was nice to reconnect with her after all these years.

Here are four takeaways from Lai Siong’s session last week:

  1. Let Go. The truth is I am the ONLY ONE who treasures my gazillion photos, keepsakes, and memories. It was no joke singlehandedly clearing our landed childhood home when we moved to our smaller HDB. There’s no one to do my decluttering for me when I am gone.
  2. Choose. A digital collage forces you to select highlights of special events. We only need a few photos to jolt memories and stories. Less is really more!
  3. Make New Memories. Recently I watched a Peranakan play at the Asian Civilisation Museum (ASM). Since I had a good 30-minutes before the show started, I decided to take a short stroll along the Singapore River. What I saw that evening awoke in me the wish to get out more.
  4. Free to Enjoy. Singapore does not need to be expensive. There are many free parks and spaces to enjoy. Singaporeans and PRs enjoy free admission to the permanent galleries of over 10 world-class national museums and heritage institutions year-round.
