A amateur’s little study on Hebrew Imperfect Tense

In Biblical Hebrew the Imperfect Tense is generally used to describe actions that:

  • are not completed or
  • occur in the present or
  • occur in the future.

The context indicates if the activity plays out in the past, present, continuing future fulfilment or in all three time-frames. Take for example Genesis 22:14

And Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it will be provided”.

In Gen 22:14, “The LORD will provide” is written in the Imperfect Tense.

This action applies to all three time-frames:

  1. God keeps on providing (present tense),
  2. is repeatedly providing (past),
  3. and will continue to provide (future).

God’s provision is omnitemporal (not limited by time).

Whatever your circumstance may be, may this truth keep your heart and mind at peace today. The LORD will provide:

  • past
  • present, and
  • continuing future

Trivial note: I did my research from the internet and The Discovery Bible. It’s a great study tool non-speakers of the Greek and Hebrew language.

Whatever your circumstance may be, may this truth keep your heart and mind at peace today. The LORD will provide past, present, and continuing future.
